My Shepherd,* My Shield

Updated: Aug 9, 2021

I found Ps 23:1 AMP version illuminating and so helpful for me to find my rest at night after pain medication for surgery had messed up my sleep patterns. It reads:

The Lord is my Shepherd to feed, to guide and to shield me, I shall not want.

The word shield gave me a visual of Him as my Lord and protector, shielding me from enemy fire (my busy thoughts). He is standing by my side as my helper. My part is to keep focussed on Him as He leads me through the attacks. All around me are trials and enemy fire but He puts a boundary around me that nothing can get through. It has helped me recognise the power and strength of my God.

We all have enemy fire at times when our weakest link is fired upon. It might be late nights, inability to get up to pray, anger management issues, maxing out the credit card or taking another drink when we should not.

He wants to lead us through our trials, as a friend and as a helper. What better help is there? No matter what our situation, Jesus our Shepherd will lead us through, as the Psalmist continues:

Even though I walk through the [sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me …

Bring yourself and your weaknesses to the Shepherd. Like me, and countless others, He will get us through, as we stay focussed on Him.
